What to ask a gardener or landscaper before the first visit

Insurance certificate. Public liability cover is the minimum for anyone running a mower, hedge trimmer or chainsaw on your land; ask to see the document, not just hear the figure.
Where the waste goes. Green waste carried away by a contractor must travel under an Environment Agency waste-carrier registration; the number is searchable on the Agency's public register, and fly-tipped waste can come back on the householder.
Who climbs the tree. Felling and crown work should be done by someone with chainsaw certificates (Lantra or NPTC) — Arboricultural Association approval is the gold standard — and the tree's status (preservation order, conservation area) should be checked before anything is cut.
The job in writing. A short scope — visits per month, what each visit includes, how waste and extras are charged — avoids most disputes on maintenance contracts.
Somewhere to look. A comparable job a few streets away, seen in person, says more than any review score.

Marlborough Landscapes looked after commercial grounds in the Kennet valley and beyond for many years and is no longer taking on work. Enquiries still arrive, so rather than turn people away empty-handed the site now points them to firms that are trading locally — found through their own websites and checked in September 2026.
