Scarifying and aerating are two separate but complementary treatments that improve lawn health, especially on clay soils or lawns under heavy use. Both involve removing barriers to healthy growth—one removes organic debris from the surface, the other opens pathways for air and water to reach grass roots. Understanding when and how to perform these treatments, and which aeration method suits your lawn, will help you achieve the best results.

What is thatch and why remove it

Thatch is a layer of dead grass clippings, moss, and organic debris that accumulates on the soil surface between living grass blades and the soil itself. A thin layer of thatch (under 6mm) is normal and beneficial, providing insulation and cushioning. However, when thatch builds up—particularly on lawns receiving regular applications of fertiliser or clippings from frequent mowing—it can become thick enough to prevent water and air from reaching the soil.

The RHS suggests checking whether your lawn needs scarifying by looking at the grass: if you cannot see soil between the blades of grass when looking down at the lawn, thatch has likely accumulated. A thick thatch layer also favours moss, fungal diseases, and allows drought stress to develop quickly because water cannot penetrate to the roots below.

Scarifying: the process and timing

Scarifying involves using a spring-tined rake or powered scarifier to tear out thatch and dead moss from the lawn. The RHS recommends doing this in September or October, when grass is in its second active growth phase of the year and has time to recover before winter dormancy. In some cases, particularly on severely matted lawns, spring (March to May) scarification can also be effective, as grass growth is vigorous and recovery is quick.

Expect the lawn to look rough, patchy, and significantly damaged immediately after scarification. This is normal. All the material raked up should be collected and either composted or disposed of. Within a few weeks, healthy grass will fill in the bare patches and the lawn’s appearance will improve dramatically.

Well-maintained lawns typically need scarifying once a year, usually in autumn. Lawns under heavy use or those with a history of moss problems may benefit from scarifying twice yearly—in spring and autumn.

Aeration: improving soil conditions

Aeration improves the movement of air and water through the soil, which helps grass roots develop more deeply and makes the lawn more resilient to both drought and waterlogging. On clay soils (common throughout Wiltshire and surrounding counties), poor drainage and compaction are persistent challenges, making aeration particularly valuable.

Autumn—ideally September to October—is the best time to aerate in the UK, when soil is still warm from summer but moisture is returning with autumn rain. Grass is in active growth and can recover well. Spring (March to May) is a secondary option, though summer and winter are avoided: summer heat stress makes recovery difficult, and winter dormancy means little regrowth to heal aeration holes.

Most lawns need aerating every two to three years. However, lawns on clay soil, under heavy foot traffic, or showing signs of waterlogging after rain may benefit from aerating annually.

Hollow-tine versus spike aeration

Two main aeration methods exist: hollow-tine (also called core or plug aeration) and spike aeration. The RHS recommends different approaches depending on soil type and severity of compaction.

Hollow-tine aerators extract complete cylindrical cores of soil from the lawn, typically spaced 10–15cm apart and going as deep as possible. These cores are left on the lawn to break down and act as a natural top-dressing. Spike aeration uses a garden fork or mechanical spiker to puncture the soil without removing material, spacing holes 10–15cm apart.

The RHS specifically advises that on clay or waterlogged soils, hollow-tine aeration is more effective than simple spiking. For most UK lawns—particularly those on clay, those never aerated before, or showing clear waterlogging—hollow-tine aeration is therefore the superior choice. The initial appearance is less attractive (the lawn dotted with extracted soil cores), but these break down over weeks and improve aeration for longer. Simple spike aeration may suffice for lighter compaction on sandy or free-draining soils.

Scarification followed by aeration: the sequence

Always scarify before aerating. Scarification removes the debris from the surface; aeration then opens pathways through the soil below. If you aerate first, thatch debris will fall back into and block the aeration holes, reducing their effectiveness. After both treatments are complete, the lawn will look distressed, but recovery is rapid in autumn.

Overseeding after aeration

Overseeding can follow aeration and scarification to repair bare patches or thin areas. The open holes and disturbed soil created by aeration improve seed-to-soil contact, making establishment more reliable than scattering seed onto intact turf. If you choose to overseed after autumn aeration, allow newly germinated seedlings several weeks to establish before temperatures drop significantly. Spring overseeding after spring aeration is also possible, though you may need to water consistently during dry spells to support establishment.
